What is Halal all about?
Halal is an Islamic Arabic term meaning “permissible”. It has both a general and specific meaning. There are special techniques practiced by Muslims where the animal or bird is slaughtered in a single stroke so it is killed immediately and the blood is drained completely before being used. Muslims can only consume meat if it has been slaughtered in this way. Any other way is not considered Halal.

Halal Certification
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has written rules for Halal in a way that ensures the government’s food inspection agency doesn’t need to get involved in sometimes touchy religious definitions of what constitutes halal food. The oversight is left to religious groups themselves. The certification is designed to mitigate fraudulent foods sold as Halal, but are not.
